Rescue of  7 Live cats from a Residence in Sligo Town where 17+ more cats bodies were discovered.

Picture
On the mornin of  Tuesday June 1st   Sligo Animal Rescue  received a distressing call of a number of cats locked in a house for apparently over 3months at a Sligo Town Residence.  Immediately Maureen and Dorothy contacted Sligo Garda Station and organised to meet at this residence.  What they were about to witness was one of the most Horrific scenes imaginable.  Noboby including the Garda present, the local residence or our team expected to find what they did.
The flies and maggots were visible on the windows and at first it was thought perhaps there were human remains in the house.  The blinds were all drawn and it was difficult to see inside. One cat was visible on the bathroom window. Our team had to hold back until the Garda cleared the scene, once the 'Borough Council' had opened the residence.
What was to ensue was the rescue of a number of very distressed cats, living off the dead ones. Any one to enter this residence had to wear Forensic Clothing, for there own Health and Safety. As our team went through this house they had to endure the horrfic stench of dead bodies and 3 months of excrement, all worsened by the house having been sealed for so long.  It was almost impossible to not to be physically  sick at this scene.  Dorothy described it as 'Something out of a Horror Movie'
These cats were without Food or Water for 3 months  and it is hard to believe any of them survived.  The first cat that rushed through the door when opened, raced to water and didn't lift its head from the water for approx 10 mins due to its massive thirst.
Our team members Maureen and Dorothy with the help of  Veterinary Surgeon 'Anthony Sweeney' and Veterinary Nurse 'Vanessa Harte' of Inishfree Veterinary Hospital Sligo and members of the Gardai went on to rescue 7 live cats.  As they searched through the house they witnessed the live cats eating off the dead ones , even carrying them around in their months , so great was their hunger. It was clear the stronger ones only survived by eating the weaker ones.  It is very hard to comprehend how this residence reached this state and how these poor cats were locked up for so long and endured so much.
Of the 7 living  cats, 1 had to be put to sleep . The other 6 cats are been cared for and considering what they have been through are doing well.  One of them  is slower to recover than the others and we will keep you all posted on there progress.
This  rescue  was one of the most horrific and saddest cases our group have ever worked this.  the sad fact of the matter is that there are probably more similiar cases out ther ethat have not been discovered yet . The whole issue of over population amoung feral cats especially in Sligo town  as well as houses with multiple cats has got to be addressed.  Something positive has got to be done before we have another such hoffific story going to press.
The Molloway place story was so  horrific  it has been picked up by all the Local & National Newspapers  as well as 'The Belfact Telegraph. Multiple interviews were covered by OCEAN FM . Also the 'Sunday World' on June 20th.

Had it not been for  'Sligo Animal Rescue' those  7  remaining cats would have  endured the same horrific death that the rest of their group did. We would like to thank 'Anthony and Vanessa' of Inishfree Veterinary Hospital  and the Gardai present for their tremendous assistance without which Maureen and Dorothy's job would have been so much more difficult and distressing.
Lets hope that lessons can be learned from this very sad case and that in Co. Sligo we never witness this again.

One of our Team  shows the remains of one of these half-eaten bodies.. Unimaginable what these cats must have suffered before their deaths

Rescuers  bring out some of the cats.  At least these cats were saved the same horrible death that their friends endured.
